We were recently called in to do a repair on some paver steps and some patio work in the Appleton area. As you can see from the photo below, there had been quite a bit of settling around the steps.
Because of the way it settled we suspected that the back side of the steps had been built using the home’s sheathing as support for the crushed stone base. We were right – when we took apart the steps we found some serious rot of the sheathing.
In the picture below you can see how in some areas, more than half of the 1 1/4″ sheathing had rotted away, due to the moisture the crushed stone had been holding right up against the wood.
Thankfully the rot stopped there and hadn’t worked it’s way into the floor joists. We trimmed out all the rotted sheathing, replaced with new, added house wrap and groundbreaker as a moisture barrier, then began the process of rebuilding the steps, being sure to leave a small air gap along the back so any moisture would seep into the ground instead of the home.
When we were done, the steps were better than new, patio cleaned up with a fresh install of polymeric sand, and ready to enjoy!
